The exhibition entitled Design Without Borders will be open to the public for more than two months. The exhibition consists of madeinhungary, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and meed – Meeting of European and Central European Designers, which is being held now for the third time. The show, which is being coordinated and organized by textile designer Szilvia Szigeti and interior designer Tamás Radnóti, will present objects and collections created by independently working Czech, Polish, Slovak and Hungarian furniture, textile, industrial and interior designers. Alongside works by designers, in a section curated by colleagues of the Budapest Gallery (Gábor Andrási, Ágnes Konkoly, Zsuzsanna Szegedy-Maszák and Tamás Török) Hungarian contemporary artists will display object-simulations. Environmentally conscious groups and organizations working in social design will also have an opportunity to present their projects.
As usual, the organizers have placed considerable emphasis on the arrangement of a professional expo-day, on which a series of 10-minute-long presentations by the artists themselves will be held, along with lectures on various important international projects as the projects of Academy Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart and Lodz Design Festival (for a detailed list of programs, see our website).
The series of programs will be further enriched by productions from other fields of the arts.As part of the exhibition opening ceremony, on 4 October a performance by the Góbi Dance Company entitled Object-Space-Dance will be held. The performance, which will begin at 6 pm, will bring the objects on display to life.Their production will be performed again as part of the Gallery Weekend of the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival on 17 October and again on 8 November, at 6 pm on both occasions.
As part of the Gallery Weekend, on 17 October, beginning at 3 pm, József Martinkó, editor-in-chief of Octogon, will give a tour of the exhibition and participating designers and artists will join us for talks.
Organisers of madeinhungary+meed
Textile designer Szilvia Szigeti and interior designer Tamás Radnóti have coordinated and organised the madeinhungary exhibitions since 2004 and the meed – Meeting of European and Central Eastern European Designers – exhibitions since 2012. The designer couple completed their studies at the MOME Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (previously Academy of Applied Arts). Both received scholarships from the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. They are the founders of Eventuell Gallery and recipients of the Hungarian Design Award and the Lajos Kozma Grant. Alongside their own designs in textile and interior design, they have organised nearly 200 exhibitions and programs, including exhibitions, shows of the Eventuell Gallery, the Textivals of the 1990s, and the exhibition entitled BútoroSokk (focusing on contemporary furniture design) and the madeinhungary.
Brief history of the madeinhungary+meed exhibition
The exhibition entitled Contemporary Hungarian Furniture Collection was the predecessor of the madeinhungary exhibitions. An independent section of the HomeTrend and Design exhibitions, it was organized annually by design critic and essayist Rita Mária Halasi between 2000 and 2003. In its current form, madeinhungary is the result of unparalleled professional collaboration. Between 2004 and 2012, it was a separate show in the HomeTrend exhibitions that were held in the Budapest Kunsthalle, the Gödör Klub and Budapest Millenáris. As of 2013, it has been part of Design Week. In 2013, appropriate space was provided by the VAM Design Center. In 2014, it has been organized in collaboration with the Budapest Gallery; the exhibition will be housed in the New Budapest Gallery in Bálna.
The Future of madeinhungary+meed
The exhibition showcases works from the independently designed and developed collections of Czech, Polish, Slovak, and Hungarian designers – interior designers, architects, and industrial, furniture and textile designers. Organisers and participants envision this exhibition as one of the most prominent independent civil professional forums of the region and hope that it may create a basis for dialogue focusing on similar traditions and cultural roots in order to promote joint projects and exhibitions within as well as outside of the region.
Sponsors and partners of madeinhungary+meed Between 2004 and 2012, the exhibition was made possible first and foremost with the support of HomeTrend and the National Cultural Fund, as well as the financial willingness of individual participants.
In the last three years, the chief sponsor, in addition to those mentioned above, has been the International Visegrad Fund.
Our most important partners include the Czech Center, the Polish Institute and the Slovak Institute in Budapest, the Akademie Schloss Solitude of Stuttgart, the Prague-based Desidneast.eu, the Design Festival of Lodz, the Slovak Designby.Sk, the Digital Packaging and Promotion Ltd., the Góbi Dance Company, and as of this year the Budapest Gallery, Design Week, the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival, and the Autumn Festival of Museums. Major media sponsor is the Octogon Magazine.
